Coco Storm
Stout | 6.9% ALC. VOL | 30 IBU | Brewed 2018-2023
When exoticism meets roasting: a tropical getaway in stout form
The portrait
Coco Storm is a bold foray into the world of flavored beers, where La Nébuleuse has dared to combine the classic notes of a stout with decidedly exotic flavors. Brewed with pale and Vienna malts and oats, this beer develops a creamy and slightly sweet base, softened by the addition of coconut and hazelnut extracts.
On the nose, aromas of roasted hazelnuts dominate, almost reminiscent of a tropical cocktail. On the palate, Coco Storm surprises with its delicate balance between exotic sweetness and a distinct bitterness. Some tasters detect notes of Malibu, the iconic coconut liqueur, while others note a bitterness and pungency that quickly counterbalance the sweetness. The texture remains relatively light for a stout, with medium carbonation that refreshes the palate.
This beer is divisive: some appreciate its originality and its gourmet side, others find it unbalanced with slightly diluted flavors. One thing is certain: Coco Storm does not leave you indifferent and must be savored in moderation – it is difficult to finish a bottle alone, such is the generous profile.
The story
Coco Storm is part of La Nébuleuse's period of creative experimentation, a time when the Renens-based brewery was eager to push the boundaries of traditional styles. Inspired by North American brewing culture and its taste for bold, flavorful beers, founders Arthur, Kouros, and Jeremy dreamed up this unlikely combination of stout and tropical flavors.
The name "Storm" evokes both the power of a storm and the brewery's iconic zeppelin crossing the nebulae—this time under a sky of paradise islands. This beer reflects the playful and offbeat spirit that has driven La Nébuleuse since its beginnings in 2014, where each creation tells a story and invites you on a journey.
Food and beer pairings
Coco Storm, with its unique aromatic profile combining coconut, hazelnut and roasted notes, calls for creative pairings:
Desserts : A dark chocolate fondant or tiramisu will echo the roasted notes of the stout while contrasting with the sweetness of the coconut. A chocolate mousse or a coffee-chocolate brownie will create a perfect resonance with the character of the stout.
Cheeses : Dare to try a full-bodied blue cheese (Roquefort, Gorgonzola) whose strength will stand up to the aromatic intensity of the beer, or a mature hard cheese that will complement the hazelnut notes.
Exotic dishes : A mild vegetable curry with coconut or a Thai dish with roasted peanuts will play on the complementarity of tropical flavors.
The final word
Coco Storm remains a unique brewing experience in the history of La Nébuleuse – one of those bold creations that demonstrate the Vaudois brewery's spirit of exploration. Even though it no longer flows from the Zeppelin vats today, it has made an impression with its originality and deliberate approach. For those lucky enough to taste it, it remains an exotic, roasted memory, reminding us that brewing also means daring to think outside the box.
Cheers! 🍻
