Gløg
Glühbier | 7.5% ALC. VOL | 17 IBU | Brewed in September 2016
The beer that has been masquerading as coffee since 2016
The portrait
Gløg is our ultimate hack of the system. Why let mulled wine have the monopoly on hot winter drinks? We took the concept of Glühwein and teleported it to the world of brewing. The result? A Glühbier that's drunk at 80°C and that actually lets you tell the kids that yes, that's coffee in your mug.
Reheated in a bain-marie (not a microwave, you barbarians), it releases an aromatic bouquet that would make an entire Christmas market pale in comparison. Cloves lead the way, candied fruit reinforces, and that little something that a discerning taster might identify as... dried elfin? (We categorically deny dehydrating mythological creatures.)
The robust malty body unfurls its caramel and gingerbread aromas like a cozy blanket. Infused vanilla smooths out the rough edges while the 17 IBUs play a discreet role on the finish. It's our liquid version of a Christmas sweater: comforting, surprising, and slightly subversive.
The story
Gløg was born out of frustration: why does mulled wine monopolize Christmas markets? Our team embarked on a near-impossible mission: to create a beer that can be drunk hot without becoming a sickeningly malty soup.
The testing sessions resembled a mad chemist's lab. Optimal temperature? Spice profile? Carbonation level that survives heating? Every parameter was calibrated with the precision of a genetic sequencer. The stroke of genius? Designing a beer that works equally well cold (for the rebels) and hot (for the concept conformists).
This seasonal creation proved that traditions could be reinvented without betraying them. A respectful snub to convention, served in a steaming mug.
Food and beer pairings
The Gløg transcended classical chords:
-
Homemade gingerbread (the obvious)
-
Cheese Fondue (Extreme Comfort Version)
-
Christmas Spice Cookies
-
Hot chestnuts
-
Raclette (because why not)
-
Alone, in front of a fireplace
-
With a thermometer to check 80°C (precision team)
The final word
Gløg warmed our winters for several seasons before bowing out. This pioneer of warm beer remains in our annals as THE proof that you can hack any tradition with enough creativity and nerve.
For those who sipped it while pretending to drink coffee, you are part of a select club of taste conspirators. Gløg embodied our philosophy: question the obvious, experiment without limits, and transform winter into a brewing playground. We still miss the dried elves.
Cheers! 🍻
